D.A.R.E. +
P.L.U.S.
|
By Glenn Levant
President and Founding Director, D.A.R.E. America
|
 | Much has changed about the
experience of going to school for the average youngster.
Children from single parent families are no longer the
exception and an increasing percentage of middle school aged
children are “latch-key” kids who go home to an empty
house with a television set as their babysitter.
|
 | The D.A.R.E.+ P.L.U.S. program
is an answer to the critics’ questions of what children
are to do after they "just say no" to drugs in the
fifth grade. The extended acronym which stands for
"Play and Learn Under Supervision," truly
expresses the extended goal that D.A.R.E. America is
achieving. Once the fifth grade children have interacted and
gone through a series of lessons being taught by D.A.R.E.
officers, they are then able to move on and start taking
responsibility for the actions that will lead them to engage
in activities other than drugs.
|
 | D.A.R.E.+ P.L.U.S. programs
are currently running in several areas of the United States.
Campus programs in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Houston are
each positively impacting thousands of kids.
|
 | In any of these positive and
necessary P.L.U.S. programs throughout the country, students
cannot receive guidance if there are not enough volunteers
to teach and guide. For more information on volunteering,
please contact D.A.R.E.+ P.L.U.S. Director Nationwide, Jill
Roberts, 703.812.3377 or email, jill.roberts@dare.com.
